How To Make: Monkey Gland

Monkey Gland

  • 50ml of Gin
  • 25ml of fresh orange juice
  • A dash of pastis
  • A glug of grenadine
  • Garnish with a maraschino cherry on a stick
  • Preferred glass would be a frosted cocktail glass

Best name for a cocktail ever.

According to Wikipedia, it is named after the pseudoscience surgical technique of grafting monkey testicle tissue into humans developed by quack Russian doctor Dr Serge Voronoff to produce longevity. So if a guy named Serge is eager to buy you lots of these at bar, be on your guard.

Several recipes call for Benedictine or Absinthe (in particular the Harry's Bar version) in the place of pastis, but I rarely have Benedictine around, and a pastis like Pernod & Ricard is cheaper and easier to find. Also, I love Pernod and it's better to have around when there is French cycling on TV.

Add the gin, orange juice, pastis and grenadine into cocktail shaker with ice. Shake with vigour, and strain into the glass. Garnish with the cherry on a stick.
